Dr. J. Vernon McGee was a radio preacher whose major accomplishment in the ministry was to create a 5-year “Through the Bible” course, in which he went through every book of the Bible.

If you are of a certain age, you might remember his broadcasts on the radio.  Though no man is perfect, and all are susceptible to error, I have a great deal of respect for anyone who dedicated their lives to such an endeavor.

At the beginning of the 5-year study, he talked about 10 “guidelines” or suggestions on how to study the Bible.  In Guidelines #9, he talked about an elderly gentleman who wrote a letter to his Pastor, on what he thought Heaven was like.

Here is the letter’s contents:

“Next Sunday you are to talk about Heaven, I’m interested in that land, because I’ve held a clear title to a bit of property there for 55 years…
I did not buy it, it was given to me without money and without price…
But the donor purchased it for me at a tremendous sacrifice.

I’m not holding it for speculations since the Title is not transferable.

It’s not a vacant lot, for more than half a century I’ve been sending material out of which the greatest architect and builder of the Universe has been building a home for me which will never need to be repaired because it will suit me perfectly and will never grow old.
Termites can never undermine its foundation for it rests upon the Rock of Ages.

Fire cannot destroy it, floods cannot wash it away.

No locks or bolts will ever be placed on its door, for no vicious person can ever enter that land where my dwelling stands, now almost completed, and almost ready for me to enter in, and abide in peace eternally without fear of being ejected.”

What a wonderful place to retire, and now, 40 years after hearing that the first time, I am that elderly man, trying to prepare for my retirement…
